Simply put this is ultrasound of the heart. This is a tool used to evaluate cardiac/heart function in real time.
It is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that allows a veterinary cardiologist to assess your pets condition. High frequency sound waves form a picture of your pets heart.
Your veterinarian may recommend this type of Imaging if they suspect that your pet’s heart may be compromised in any way. A heart murmur is usually a frequent reason for this recommendation.
A heart murmur is an abnormal sound heard when a veterinarian listens to your pet’s heart with a stethoscope. They can occur due to various reasons, like heart valve disease, congenital defects, Infections amongst others.
An echocardiogram evaluates the size, shape, chambers of the heart and all surrounding structures. It is a specialized procedure performed by either a cardiologist or a cardiology technician. It involves the use of special probes ( Transducers) to take measurements which allow certain calculations to be made in order to help assess how well the heart is functioning.
When this is performed on time, several heart diseases can be monitored and managed appropriately to improve your pets quality of life.
