Lots of common items we use daily can harm or even kill our pets. The most common Items include:
1. Human Medications
Pain medications, antidepressants, cold medications, vitamins, and even herbal supplements can be toxic. Pets are curious and can chew pill bottles open.
Tip: Store medicines in upper cabinets, out of reach of pets.
2. Cleaning Products
Bleach, toilet bowl cleaners, and disinfectants have chemicals that can irritate your pet’s skin or be poisonous if licked.
If you’re freshening up your home, be mindful of cleaners and air fresheners. Open windows when using strong chemicals.
Tip: Allow floors and surfaces to dry before allowing your pet to walk on them.
3. Toxic Foods for Pets
Chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, caffeine, and alcohol are all toxic. Even sugar-free gum with xylitol is lethal.
Tip: Never leave food sitting on counters or tables.
4. Houseplants and Flowers
Lilies, tulips, and azaleas are gorgeous, but poisonous. Even small nips can cause vomiting or worse.
Tip: Before you bring any plant into your house, do research on it.
5. Lawn and Garden Products
Fertilizers, weed killers, and pesticides can stay on your grass and harm your pet when they walk outside.
Tip: Please read all labels. Use only pet-safe garden products.
5. Garage Hazards
Car products such as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze are very toxic. Even a tiny spill can be lethal.
Tip: Keep animals out of the garage or where they are kept.
6. Pest Control
Bug bait and rat poison might protect your house, but they’re poison traps for your pet, too.
Tip: Please use pet-friendly substitutes or consult with your vet.
