What is an Emergency for Pets?

Before you decide what to do in an emergency, it is crucial to recognize when the situation needs immediate action.

Here are a few signs that your pet might be experiencing an emergency:

If your pet is showing any of these signs/ needs this type of care, please go to an ER facility immediately.

What Should You Do in an Emergency?

When your pet is in an emergency, feeling overwhelmed and scared is purely justifiable. However, you must pull yourself together because your being calm and steady makes a lot of difference.

1. Stay Relaxed and Analyze the Problem

Take a deep breath. It will help you remain calm while assessing the matter at hand.

2. Get your pet immediately to an ER facility or call us at Brijon Veterinary Urgent Care for guidance.

3. Transport Your Pet Safely

We do not hospitalize overnight or handle Emergency cases at Brijon Veterinary Urgent Care, but if you end up here, you will get quick, compassionate, and professional care during an emergency for your pet. Here is what usually happens during an  urgent/emergency visit:

1. Initial Evaluation: The vet assesses your pet’s state and then stabilizes it so that the condition does not worsen. In this case, fluids, oxygen, or medications might be administered.

2. Diagnostic Procedures: X-rays, blood work, or ultrasound tests are done to determine the problem. For instance, if your pet has difficulty breathing, an X-ray could be done to help with diagnosis.

3. Treatment Plan: The vet discusses treatment options. If an ER transfer is needed, we will help by calling the ER hospital to properly hand over the case. We will explain everything clearly so that you can make informed decisions for your pet.

Emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important to stay calm and keep your cool. Brijon Veterinary Urgent Care can take care of most urgent care needs but with the conditions listed above an ER hospital may be the best bet right away.
